Don Quixote's-Aug. 21 REVIEW:
WELL... This show was a rousing good one. All participants and guests were enthused by the evening's festivities. I personally had a wonderful time and was especially overwhelmed by Chojo Jacques (guest violinist) jamming along with an electronic chicken. This was quite a feat, as the randomized clucking from this miraculous bird was totally unpredictable. One of those "You'd have to see it (hear it) to believe it" moments. Can we say "pure touch of genius" here? The Jimmy Chickenpants band is good times for all... Joni Matthews is well suited to lead this group, with her vivacious character, lovely smile, and awesome vocal capabilities. ANY of the musicians are able to carry the band. Catch this fine act while you can.
DamDave's Harmony Creek opened the show with a great set of their own, with Dave's originals proving, as usual, that he is a world-class songwriter. When a serious promoter gets ahold of "Blue Day", this dude is gonna hit the bigtime. Joined by Brookdale Bluegrass's own Eric Burman, (download his original "Summer Love"), Harmony Creek has a terrific combination of vocal talents and original compositions. Elicia Burton on fiddle was enthusiastic and soulful, also adding backup voicing to this wonderful, unique sound... I swear I heard Sarah... Rounded out by buddies Kaj Beck on lead guitar and Mark Welker on bass, this band is obviously more than a flash in the pan. -Mike Hofer
Who IS JIMMY CHICKENPANTS? No one really knows, but the band hales from the Santa Cruz area. They traditionally put the 'hick' in 'chicken' with music that combines bluegrass, newergrass, jazzgrass, and originalgrass, otherwise known as "poultry in motion". Jimmy's influences apparently include Bill Monroe, Gillian Welch, Bela Fleck, Duke Ellington, and most significantly, Rocky the Petaluma Free Range Chicken. Jimmy has been touted as one of Santa Cruz's best kept secrets by KPIG radio.
